Merike Tamm (b. 1983 in Tartu)

Graduated from the Tartu Art College, furthered her studies in Tampere and Ghent. Lives and works in Tallinn, occasionally also on Manilaid island. Works mainly in painting and graphic design.

“I try to paint based on impressions experienced in nature. For them to be recorded, one has to wander and sit around a lot. Thus, the paintings become a pictorial diary of spending time outdoors. Sometimes the images come to me on their own, I sketch them down in a folder and execute them at a suitable moment. I paint the pictures in the studio, generally in layers, occasionally tinkering with old-school Flemish style. Archetypal places, biodiversity, turpentine.”
